IBM 000-206 High-End Disk Solutions for Open Systems Version 1

Sunday 4 April 2010 @ 12:29 pm

I have today  just passed my IBM 000-206 High-End Disk Solutions for Open Systems Version 1. I thought I will post out my tips for what to study to help others pass the exam as well.

1- Make sure you know when to use DS8000, DS6000, DS4000, Nseries & SVC. There are so many scenario questions that will require you to be able to distinguish between the usage of each of the above storage types.

2- Make sure you are aware of the different versions of IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center, when to use which version, & what its used for.

3- Make sure you know the IBM DS8000 in and out. Make sure you know when to use DS8100 & when do you need DS8300.…

Install IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server (Day 4 – Part I)

Saturday 6 March 2010 @ 10:29 am

Today, you will learn how to install IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server. You have two methods of getting the installation steps. Just watching the small video below after each section, or read the article below. Ah should I make this video training to be a paid one!!! Should it cost $$$$? Just a thought. As I am not paid to put this online & really its more of a time constrain, I was not able to add voice to these video or re-edit the videos & did not want to drag this tutorial further till I add voice to them. If you want to donate some of your time to do this, I can provide the video source.

Note: unfortunately I did not have the original media of the IBM TSM 5.5 at the time I was writing this tutorial so I have downloaded the installers from the IBM website & put them in a folder called TSM_Images on my E drive.…

Installing IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (Day 3)

Saturday 6 March 2010 @ 9:37 am

OK, I have been kicked right and lefts by the e-mails I got to continue my tutorial. In the next few days I will try to put as much of it out there. I had wrote many of the articles, but I had no time to post them lately being busy with IBM Tivoli FlashCopy Manager.

Today, we will start with the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager installation. I will limit this day short to point out the two different parts of the installation & will post the actual installaiton of each part on Day 4, 5, & 6.  Though I will try to upload these 4 Days of my tutorial all at once for you to enjoy it.

Although IBM Tivoli Storage Manager can be installed & used on multiple operating systems & platforms, in our course we will cover windows on Intel X86 only.…

IBM Systems Director 6.1 becomes unusable with ATKCOR031E An unknown error has occurred

Monday 15 February 2010 @ 3:01 pm

After using IBM Systems Director 6.1 for a month or so, customers seems to always hit a funny error “ATKCOR031E An unknown error has occurred”. This error tear up IBM Systems Director 6.1 unusable. This error seems to come up when discovering many items usually 500 or more, which cause IBM Director to stuck & force you to reboot the machine. After the reboot you start IBM Director web console & get hammered with the error on the web console.

The only work around I have been able to find on the net so far was to do an smreset to IBM Director. The problem with this its a destructive procedure and will get you to lose your configuration & the data in your IBM Director Database.…

8.3. Microsoft vShadow Transaction Consistent Database Cloning to a different server

Saturday 21 November 2009 @ 3:51 pm

You might get into the situation where you have to quickly clone your production database to a different server for some release management. In most situations, you will not be able to take that database down, neither have the time to do backup & restore so online transaction consistent database cloning will be a great tool for you. The capability of IBM VDS & DS8000 FlashCopy & vShadow with a bit of scripting can provide you with just that. Below is a small batch files with explanation which can do just that.

======== fcm.bat ========

del bc1.xml sc1.cmd

C:\fcm\vshadow.exe -p -t=bc1.xml -script=sc1.cmd d: l:

echo c:\fcm\fcmmount.bat >> sc1.cmd

copy c:\fcm\bc1.xml \\SQLsrv01_POC\C$\fcm /y

copy c:\fcm\sc1.cmd \\SQLsrv01_POC\C$\fcm /y

copy c:\fcm\fcmmount.bat \\SQLsrv01_POC\C$\fcm /y

copy c:\fcm\fcmremote.bat

8.2. Microsoft vShadow Transaction Consistent Database Cloning to the same server

Saturday 21 November 2009 @ 3:37 pm

You might get into the situation where you have to quickly clone your production database to the same server for some release management. In most situations, you will not be able to take that database down, neither have the time to do backup & restore so online transaction consistent database cloning will be a great tool for you. The capability of IBM VDS & DS8000 FlashCopy & vShadow with a bit of scripting can provide you with just that. Below is a small batch file with explanation which can do just that.

==============Fcm2.bat================

del bc1.xml sc1.cmd

C:\fcm2\vshadow.exe -p -t=bc1.xml -script=sc1.cmd y:

echo c:\fcm2\fcmmount.bat >> sc1.cmd

c:\fcm2\vshadow -i=c:\fcm2\bc1.xml

c:\fcm2\sc1.cmd

===========fcmmount.bat==========

c:\fcm2\vshadow -el=%SHADOW_ID_1%,D:\mytest

c:\fcm2\vshadow -bw=%SHADOW_SET_ID%

In order for the script above to work you have to create the two batch files with the same names shown above each.…

8.1. IBM DS8000 Boot from SAN Operating System Cloning

Saturday 21 November 2009 @ 2:06 pm

If you have a boot from SAN server, you will be able to easily clone it for a backup or deployment purpose using the native DS8000 FlashCopy. As mentioned earlier FlashCopy is an optional feature for the DS8000, which means it will require an additional license to enable. The SAN administrator can initiate a FlashCopy of Boot from SAN Disk using the DS8000 Storage Manager GUI or using the DSCLI.

Creating a FlashCopy on the DS8000 can be as easy as running the following command on DS8000 DSCLI, where 6100 is the source LUN & 6101 is the target LUN.

mkflash -seqnum 01 6100:6101

After creating a FlashCopy of a certain LUN in case you need to restore the server to its original state all you have to do is shutdown the server (shutdown will be required if it’s the boot LUN only) & Map the FlashCopy Target LUN in the place of the FlashCopy Source LUN.…

8. IBM FlashCopy usage for Cloning

Saturday 21 November 2009 @ 1:59 pm

Although cloning a boot from SAN LUN & Database LUNs to another server or to the same server still not integrated into the current FCM release & planned in the future, its achievable with a bit of scripting, which might require DSCLI access for certain operations. This section will focus on cloning & show how to achieve few cloning scenarios even before it’s fully integrated with IBM Tivoli FlashCopy manager, which is planned as a part of future release.

7.2. IBM Tivoli FlashCopy Manager Restore

Saturday 21 November 2009 @ 1:46 pm

Tivoli FlashCopy Manager offers as great amount of options when it comes to restore as it has for backup. This section will cover the most used ones. The type of features & destination types available will be limited if you don’t have TSM integration. The features & destinations which is only available with TSM integration will be pointed as they are covered.

1-     To start the IBM Tivoli FlashCopy Manager in a stand alone server all you have to do is to click on the IBM Tivoli FlashCopy Manager on the desktop or your program files menu. If you are running in a clustered environment, then you would want to to ensure you start your FCM with the /sqlserver parameters. An example of the command to run the FCM GUI in a clustered environment with an SQL Cluster  name sqlsrvpoc is:

C:\Program Files\Tivoli\FlashCopyManager\flashcopymanager.msc…
